The Sales Tax Senior Analyst ensures CarMax remains compliant with state and local sales and use tax requirements. This role conducts complex tax research, leads tax‑related projects, supports business initiatives, and helps manage compliance, audit defense, and risk mitigation for the Sales & Property Tax Team.
What you will do – Essential Responsibilities
- With minimal guidance from management conduct new state/store research, monitor state tax legislation impacting CarMax, and conduct tax research to support growth and business initiatives
- With minimal guidance from management, preparation and review of monthly tax compliance including analyzing general ledger to monthly reporting and tax variance analysis
- Work with states/localities on routine audits which includes explaining and defending CarMax tax positions and proof of tax payments
- Engage external and internal business partners to answer complex tax inquiries and documenting outcomes.
- Perform accounting activities, account reconciliations, tax exemption review, and preparing tax related budgets
- Support and lead team and peers with tax projects, audit defense, tax compliance and other accounting activities.
Purpose of the role
This position ensures CarMax meets its sales and use tax obligations across all state and local jurisdictions. The Senior Analyst provides tax guidance to key internal business partners and supports operational and strategic initiatives across the organization. To succeed in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility with accuracy, sound judgment, and minimal supervision.
Associate should possess:
- Solid knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
- Solid knowledge of sales/use tax
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills
- Strong time management skills

- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with associates at various levels
- Written and verbal communication skills

- Solid PC skills, including Microsoft Excel and Word, and Microsoft Outlook
- Alteryx experience preferred
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Minimum of 7 + years of tax experience at a public accounting firm or in a corporate tax department
- Experience working on multi-state audits
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office including writing macros

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the CarMax Home Office (Richmond, VA) and associates will work onsite 5 days per week.
