Position Overview

As a Senior Engineer – B2B Auction, you will shape the future of CarMax’s auction technology through modern engineering, creative problem‑solving, and a commitment to delivering best‑in‑class digital experiences. You will help drive technical direction, build scalable solutions, and support a platform that empowers dealers and strengthens marketplace performance. Rooted in honesty, transparency, and integrity, this role offers the chance to make a direct impact on CarMax’s nationwide auction ecosystem.

Team Overview

You will join a collaborative product team dedicated to advancing CarMax’s auction capabilities through innovative engineering and agile practices. Partnering closely with product design, product management, and architecture, you will contribute to a supportive environment that values experimentation, open communication, and continuous improvement.

Role Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Enhance and innovate CarMax’s auction website through scalable, customer‑focused engineering solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional partners to design, test, and deliver impactful product enhancements.
  • Translate experimentation and user insights into refined digital experiences.
  • Contribute to agile ceremonies and continuous delivery practices.
  • Promote technical ideas across the organization with clarity and purpose.
  • Apply strong analytical skills to solve complex business challenges.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies to elevate system performance and reliability.

Purpose of the Role

Working collaboratively and creatively as part of a close‑knit product team, you will be part of the development process from end to end: consulting users, carrying out experiments, tackling complex business problems and implementing new products. You can balance customer needs with business goals and know how to deliver technical solutions that enhance business value. Qualifications and Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience demonstrating strong technical capability.
  • At least 5 years of application development experience with modern engineering practices.
  • 5+ years of experience using .NET Core, C#, and Microsoft Azure services to build scalable solutions.
  • Proficiency with SQL Server, NoSQL database technologies, and RESTful API development.
  • Hands‑on experience with HTML, CSS, and Git for version control.
  • Experience working within Agile and DevOps environments and collaborating effectively across multiple teams.
  • Strong communication, rapid learning ability, and a proven track record of contributing successfully in a product‑focused environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with front‑end architecture.
  • Experience with React.js and its core principles.
  • Experience working within a product organization.

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Richmond Virginia or Dallas/Plano Tech Hub and have a Hybrid work arrangement.   

  • Associates based in Richmond work onsite 5 days per week. 
  • Associates based in Plano work onsite 2 days per week. 

Location Options for above Include:   

  • CarMax Midtown – Richmond, VA 
  • CarMax Technology Hub – Plano, TX
